'Suspicious Death' in Johnson County

JOHNSON COUNTY - Officials are investigating a suspicious death at a mobile home park near Iowa City. The victim has been identified as Sarah Elizabeth McKay, 34. The scene is at 18 Expo Drive, just east of the Iowa City city limits, in the Modern Manor mobile home park.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is on scene, along with officials from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. The state's crime lab, Johnson County Attorney's Office and state medical examiner's office are also helping with the investigation.

Just before midnight Sunday night, a neighbor told KCRG-TV9 she heard doors slamming just outside 18 Expo Drive in Johnson County.

Then she heard what she described as a car alarm going off.

She said she peeked out the window and saw a truck in the driveway, a vehicle she said she'd never seen before parked outside the home.

Judy Patterson, a friend of the young couple who she said lives in this mobile home, said everything seemed fine when they invited her over for dinner Friday night.

"We sat and talked and had sandwiches. Went home about 9:00. We played on the Wii, watched TV. They seemed to be in good spirits," said Patterson.

Patterson said she did not hear any screaming or fighting coming from the home Sunday night, and was awakened Monday morning by a sheriff's deputy knocking on the door asking her for information about the couple.

A release from Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek said McKay attended Mark Twain Elementary in Iowa City and was an Iowa City High graduate. She "loved her daughter Emilia ... had a great sense of humor, was extremely personable, intelligent, and had a giving heart," said the statement.

McKay worked for the last year and a half in the billing department at Hawkeye Food.
