FLOYD (AP) - Iowa State Troopers say dense fog probably caused a crash between two semi trailer trucks that let a large number of black Angus cattle loose on the roadway in Floyd County.
Neither driver was seriously injured in the crash early Thursday morning on the Avenue of the Saints, but at least 25 of the 76 head of cattle involved were either killed in the accident or had to be euthanized at the scene. The rest of the cattle were taken to a rendering facility to be slaughtered.
State Trooper Mark Domino says says visibility was zero at the time of the crash, and he was afraid it might lead to a major pile up, but it didn't.
The truck drivers were identified as Patrick Kerr, 62, of Des Moines and Kenneth Rau, 42, of Mobridge, S.D.
