ROCK RAPIDS (AP) — Authorities say a northwest Iowa man who was shot in the head at his home in Rock Rapids has died.

The Lyon County sheriff's office says Levi Hofer died on Tuesday at a hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Sheriff Blythe Bloemendall says Hofer was shot with a .22-caliber rifle on Sunday. His girlfriend, Laura Lowe, was charged on Monday with attempted murder.

Bloemendall says Hofer and Lowe had been drinking, and the two started fighting. Lowe allegedly grabbed the rifle and shot Hofer.

Lowe remained in the Lyon County jail on Wednesday on $50,000 bond. Jail officials did not know if she had an attorney.
