GUTHRIE CENTER (AP) - A Guthrie Center High School industrial arts teacher has been placed on paid leave after telling a student he couldn't build a Wiccan altar in shop class.

Dale Halferty was placed on leave on Monday. He says the student was practicing his religion during class time. District officials have not identified the student.

Wiccans consider themselves witches, pagans or neo-pagans, and say their religion is based on respect for the earth, nature and the cycle of the seasons.

Halferty says he previously told another student he couldn't build a cross in shop class because he believes in the separation of church and state.

District officials place Halferty on leave while they confer with the school's attorney.
