ELKADER — The City Council will hold a budget hearing for the coming fiscal year at 7 p.m. March 8.

Included in the $7.37 million budget is a tax levy of $17.87 per $1,000 assessed value. If approved, the owner of a $100,000 home will pay $838 in the city portion of property taxes after the state mandated 46.90 percent rollback. This year’s $5.42 million budget had a levy of $17.04, which meant the same homeowner paid $777 in city property taxes with a rollback of 45.59 percent.

City Administrator Jennifer Cowsert said the budget increase is due to the inclusion of buyout funds from the 2008 flood. Also included in the increase is money for a new Emergency Services building and funds for partial payment of a new city wastewater treatment plant.
