IOWA CITY - Alcohol brought a small group of people together Thursday afternoon at the University of Iowa.

They discussed whether the state should impose tougher restrictions on the use of highly concentrated alcohol.

Students, business representatives, and health officials spoke out at the forum.

Each of them had a different idea about what should be done to control the harmful effects of highly concentrated alcohols.

One student suggested raising the cost, so college students with limited cash can't get access to the harmful substance.

Local health leaders expressed a strong desire for an outright ban on high proof liquors like Everclear.

"You as a body are essentially approving a product that you can pour into a race car and run. A flammable product," said Doug Beardsley, Johnson County Health Dept.

The board made several decisions about stricter regulations including limited size selection, requiring registration to purchase high-content alcohol, and launching a comprehensive public awareness campaign.
