DES MOINES (AP) - A former Waterloo dentist is asking the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners to reinstate his license to practice.

In 1994, the board suspended Larry Hanus' license over allegations that he told patients they should have their fillings replaced because of possible mercury poisoning. It also accused him of providing unnecessary treatment to several patients and of displaying possible mental problems.

At a meeting Tuesday, the 54-year-old requested he get his license back.

His attorney, Charlie Brown of Washington DC, says Hanus was wrongly punished for speaking out about safety concerns.

Hanus, who now lives in Des Moines, is a licensed massage therapist and lobbyist for alternative health groups.

The board is expected to issue a ruling in a few weeks.
