DUBUQUE - Use it or lose it. That's the message Dubuque city leaders are sending to travelers who choose to fly from other, larger airports.

Delta Airlines called it quits from the Dubuque Airport last summer.

Dubuque city and business leaders say its common for travelers to expect lower air-fare if they fly out of Chicago or Moline.

"What we would ask people to do though is not skip over Dubuque to find out what Dubuque's fares are. In many cases they will find they are competitive," said Bob Peacock, Dubuque Chamber of Commerce.

"Fly Dubuque First" is an effort to reinvigorate the Chamber's campaign encouraging business professionals to use this airport. Now the group says all local travelers should think Dubuque.

"American has other options they love Dubuque but we have to make sure that they know Dubuque wants to support them as much as they possibly can," said Peacock.

The group says if travelers want more carriers and more flights in and out of Dubuque, people should use this airport more often.

"I try to fly out of Dubuque entirely because it is so convenient for me. I always check the prices sometimes it's a little more. But a lot of times in my experience it's actually been less," said John Tallent, traveler.

Airport officials say if you're searching for the cheapest flight online and it's more expensive to fly from Dubuque, they say call the airport. An airline employee may be able to lower the cost.
