DES MOINES (AP) - Officials of Iowa's largest city say more job cuts and a hiring freeze for Des Moines' police and fire departments are in the works.

City Manager Rich Clark on Monday told a City Council workshop an assistant city manager, a mechanical inspector, a clerical position in the fire department, and one vacant firefighter position would be among the job cuts. He says these and other moves he will recommend will help trim another $1.9 million from Des Moines' budget.

Clark's latest proposal will bring to $9.9 million in cuts to the city's budget. Officials say an additional $1.4 million will have to be cut for the city to overcome a $11.3 million shortfall projected over the next two fiscal years.

Des Moines officials have cut nearly $16 million to keep the city's budget in balance over the past three fiscal years.
