DUBUQUE (AP) - Dubuque police say a 74-year-old man died when the driver of the van he was riding in slammed on the brakes in a construction zone.

Police say Delbert Ernzen, of Dubuque, died in the accident last Thursday.

Authorities say Ernzen and the driver, Roger Pfeiler, 61, of Dubuque, were talking and Pfeiler didn't see the flagger motioning him to stop. He slammed on the brakes, and Ernzen flew forward in the van and hit his head.

Part of the street was closed for water main and hydrant repairs.
