CEDAR RAPIDS – People all across America are recovering from all of the excitement of the Super Bowl. Most of those celebrations centered around the big game, of course. But, some also had a more serious side.

Super Bowl parties are a tradition for the Hewitt family, but Sunday’s was a little different. It was a party with a purpose.

"I thought this would be a fun thing to be part of,” Lantz Sievert said.

While it might have looked like your standard Super Bowl celebration, it was actually a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity.

"I think we can have a lot of fun because it is Super Bowl weekend. But, at the same time, I thought...what a wonderful idea to combine. I can have fun and at the same time help out Habitat,” Bill Hewitt said.

This was just one of about forty similar events in eastern Iowa designed to call attention to the needs of our neighbors.

"I think it's hard...with all the things going on in Haiti...to focus on Cedar Rapids. But, I still think people in Cedar Rapids need as much help as possible,” Sievert said.

The Hewitts also volunteer during the summer for the organization and help with the actual construction work.

"All the families I've seen so far have been more than grateful for what Habitat has done,” Hewitt said.

Sure, everyone had an opinion about who they wanted to win. But, at this party, future Habitat homeowners are the true winners.

Money raised from the Cedar Rapids area Habitat parties will go toward building homes in flood-damaged areas. The Iowa City area chapters chose to donate their funds to Haiti.
