AMES - The Red Cross said Monday that they have opened three shelters in northern Iowa following a multi-car crash along Interstate 35.

The crash involved 30-40 vehicles and was a major factor in the decision to close the entire interstate from Ames to Clear Lake. It happened near the town of Latimer, which is 87 miles north of Des Moines. The Iowa State Patrol says that one person was killed in the accident.

Shelters were opened in Latimer, Hampton and Ames.
