DES MOINES (AP) - Sioux City businessman Bob Vander Plaats says he has raised more than $650,000 in his bid for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, with the bulk of the cash coming in after former Gov. Terry Branstad began exploring a possible run as well.

Vander Plaats said Tuesday that he raised nearly $658,000 during 2009, and had more than $203,000 in cash on hand at the end of the year. That's less than Branstad, who said he raised $1.5 million and had $1.3 million in the bank, but it's likely enough to make the June primary competitive. Vander Plaats said he collected his money from more than 1,200 individual contributions.

Vander Plaats said he spent more than $392,000 last year, with more than $203,000 in the bank.
