DUBUQUE - Dubuque is rolling out a new system to track the amount of water homeowners use.

Crews are installing the first of the computerized "smart water" meter readers. The city is working with IBM on the project and says it will save customers and the city thousands of dollars each year.

"They will be able to see on a more daily basis and eventually more frequent than that, what's going on in their house so they can find the leaks and manage their water use better," said Cory Burbach, City of Dubuque.

Right now the city is testing the devices only in certain neighborhoods.

Burbach says in the next two years everyone in the city will have access to the smart water program.
