Patience Growing Short As Snow Piles Up

The snow that fell this morning may qualify as light and fluffy when it comes to pushing it around, but there certainly was enough of it to create some travel troubles.

As storms go, this one probably didn't rate real high on the disruption scale. Cedar Rapids police did respond to a dozen or so accidents since 8 a.m., but none involved serious injuries.

The one that created the biggest bottleneck was cleaned up just before 9 a.m., when a semi heading south on I-380 slid on the snow and ice and jackknifed, blocking two lanes in the area of 33rd Avenue SW.

Otherwise, it was another typical morning of clearing the walks or digging out the vehicles.

Even though it's still early January, a lot of people are getting tired of constant snow and cold.

"When's this going to end?" Steve Bray of Cedar Rapids said. "I can't wait for about May 2010."

"It wasn't a good thing," added Robert Mitchell of Cedar Rapids. "Not at all."

Cedar Rapids road crews managed to clear the main streets before most drivers needed to get to work.

A snow emergency remains in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday, so drivers should not park on the marked snow routes. The streets department is still trying to decide if a residential snow emergency is needed to clear the side streets. However, even if it's not official yet, people parking on side streets could help the situation by moving cars until plows have a chance to push the snow to the side.
