DUMONT (AP) - Authorities say a malfunctioning furnace is to blame for a weekend fire that destroyed a Dumont home.

The fire was reported at 6:40 p.m. Sunday. According to Dumont Fire Chief Gary Bierman, the two-story home was full of smoke when firefighters arrived. He said he could not risk personnel by going inside to battle the blaze.

Authorities say the occupant of the house, Robert Paul White Jr., was not at home at the time of the fire.

Bierman says no one was injured in the fire. However, two pets were killed by the blaze.
