Fewer Fatal Crashes on Iowa Roads

By Daren Sukhram

CEDAR RAPIDS - The coming winter storm and Christmas travel will determine if Iowa sees its fewest traffic deaths in one year since World War Two.

As of last week, 364 people have died on Iowa's highways this year. That's 18 fewer than last year, and it's just 10 ahead of the 2004 pace, when Iowa saw its fewest traffic deaths since 1945.

The Iowa DOT credits the recession and high gas prices for encouraging people to slow down to save gas. That, in turn, reduces the risk of a crash.
