Iowa Man Injured While Hunting Deer

NEW MARKET (AP) - Authorities say an Iowa man was injured while hunting deer in Taylor County when a shot missed its target and a piece of slug ricocheted, striking him in the upper chest area.

The 41-year-old victim, Mathew Fedders of LeMars, was taken to Clarinda Regional Health Center, and then transferred to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where doctors were removing the slug fragment. The injury is not considered life threatening.

Fedders was hunting Sunday with his son and his brother in law, who owned the land north of New Market.

Bevington says a ricochet causing injury is not a common occurrence, but it does happen on occasion. The incident remains under investigation.
