CORNING (AP) - A tree farm west of Corning is bucking the economic downturn and thriving, with sales up almost 20 percent.
The Shearer Christmas Tree Farm has been drawing in locals for 28 years, and owner Frank Shearer says it had 40 new customers during the Thanksgiving weekend.
Shearer says the tree farm will sell more than 300 trees this year, with some reaching about 15 feet. Shearer says most of the tree farm work is done during the summer.
Since the tree farm was formed, competition in the area waned. Now, the farm is up to 3,000 trees and customers drive in from more than 30 miles away.
Shearer says trees take about eight years to grow.
