WATERLOO (AP) - Authorities in Waterloo say a man who was thrown from a highway overpass when his car was hit was conscious and alert when he was found in a parking lot about 25 feet below.
Authorities say Donald Gavigan, 49, of Waterloo was found prone on the snow and ice covered concrete Wednesday morning. He was standing on his own before an ambulance arrived, but a police officer and firefighter kept him still.
Gavigan had cuts to his face and forehead and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Witnesses say Gavigan's car spun out or was hit by another vehicle on the icy overpass. He got out of his car, which was then struck by another vehicle.
The impact from that crash threw him over the overpass wall.
