NEW ALBIN, Iowa (AP) — Officials say a man involved in a four-hour standoff with police in New Albin in northeast Iowa died of an apparent prescription drug overdose.

Allamakee (AL'-uh-muh-KEE') County sheriff Deputy Clark Melick says 51-year-old James Valentine, of Lansing, told authorities after he surrendered Tuesday night that he had taken about 100 pills. He was taken to a Waukon hospital, where he died.

Melick says there was "numerous" prescription drugs in the house, and he assumes Valentine took some of those. An autopsy was pending Thursday.

Melick says the standoff began when authorities responded to a domestic incident involving a man with a gun who refused to come out and threatened to kill himself.
