WASHINGTON COUNTY- The state medical examiner says a Mount Pleasant man shot himself as part of a suicide pact.
Investigators say Ryan Scarff, 37, and his girlfriend tried to take their own lives through carbon monoxide poisoning.
When that didn't work Scarff shot himself.
Investigators say his girlfriend then also shot him while she was in a "state of panic."
The Washington County Attorney — Barb Edmondson — said the girlfriend will not face criminal charges because the investigation showed the initial gunshot was immediately fatal and there was no evidence she had intent to tamper with the body.
Edmondson said the findings from the investigation and the results of the autopsy confirmed it was a suicide, and no further investigation will be held.
Authorities are not releasing the type of gun used, nor are they releasing specifics about the fatal gunshot wound to his head.
