JACKSON COUNTY - A Wisconsin man was injured while hunting deer in Jackson County Sunday morning.

Kevin Bourland, 37, of Hazel Green, WI, was helping a friend locate a deer that had been shot the previous day when a 20-gauge shotgun that had been propped against a tree fell, causing the gun to fire a deer slug into his thumb after he reached for it, according to a Iowa Department of Natural Resources press release.

Bourland was taken to Finely Hospital in Dubuque where he was treated.

A Burlington man was also injured in a hunting accident Sunday morning in Des Moines County.

James Nelson, 40, was hunting with his 14-year-old son Zach, when James Nelson was struck by a deer slug in the upper left thigh after they both shot at a deer running between them, according to an Iowa Department of Natural Resources press release.

James Nelson was transported by ambulance to the Great River Medical Center in Burlington.

Iowa DNR Conservation Officer Joe Fourdyce said in the release that most incidents occur during deer season when hunters are firing at a running deer.

“It is very important for hunters to know what is behind the animal before they fire. It is also very important to know exactly where everyone in your hunting party is at all times. If you are a hunter and are moving your position, you need to let the others that you are hunting with know that you have moved,” Fourdyce said.
