Father & Son Arrested in Dubuque Robbery, ShootingBy Katie Wiedemann
DUBUQUE - Police say it was a father and son who robbed a Dubuque bar and then shot a police officer. Gunmen held up Knicker's Saloon early Thursday afternoon, then exchanged fire with the officer outside the bar.
Police say it was Eddie Chest, 71, who wounded Lieutenant Scott Baxter. Baxter's out of the hospital. But Chest is still there in fair condition with bullet wounds. The Freeport, Illinois, man faces several charges, including attempted murder, and first degree robbery. Thursday night, Dubuque Police arrested his son, Eddie Roger Adams, 46, on an unrelated probation violation. But now Adams also faces attempted murder and first degree robbery charges. Corporal Nate Tyler says his good friend Scott Baxter was driving back to the police station after his lunch break Thursday afternoon. He was near Knicker's Saloon on Central Avenue when a customer inside called police. Listen to the call. That's when Baxter spotted the two men outside the bar, holding guns. Police are still investigating exactly what happened next. But Tyler says Baxter had to think fast. Tyler said, "Discharging a weapon at anytime is extremely stressful thing for any officer it's an extremely serious decision and it's something officers don't take lightly." Tyler says the outpouring of public support for Baxter has been overwhelming. "He's in very good spirits right now he's resting. He's out of the hospital and he's doing really well." Meanwhile police are still investigating many of the specifics in this case, including any other possible accomplices. Acting Police Chief Terry Tobin said, "Whether there were any other ones that assisted then following the robbery that's still a matter of investigation and there could be further charges, should those developments come up later in the investigation." Police say they found Eddie Rogers Adams Thursday night and arrested him on charges of probation from Illinois. Then investigators found the same amount of money on him that was stolen from Knicker's Saloon. Police say Eddie Chest is from Freeport, Illinois. His son, Eddie Adams, does not have a permanent address. More Good Stuff |
