WASHINGTON - Congressman Leonard Boswell announced that President Obama has signed a bill to designate a U.S. Postal Facility in Des Moines as the “Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Post Office.”
“It is important to recognize the collective sacrifices of the men and women who have served and continue to serve our nation in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Boswell, a 20-year military veteran. “This post office will create a memorial to recognize our neighbors who have courageously fought under Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.”
“Our engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan have tested the might of our men and women in uniform, who continue to rise to these challenges,” Boswell said. “Iowa has a strong tradition of service both in the U.S. armed forces and the Iowa National Guard. My prayers are with the 3,500 Iowa Guard troops who will be deployed in fall 2010 under Operation Enduring Freedom, and to any additional Iowa soldiers who could be called to serve in Afghanistan as part of the President’s new mission in the region.”
The bill was signed into law on November 30. Congressman Boswell introduced the bill on July 29 and it passed the House unanimously by a voice vote on September 15.
Congressman Boswell spent 20 years in the U.S. Army and served two tours as an assault helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War.
