CEDAR RAPIDS - An Iowa Credit Union is using a state resource to make its membership cards eco-friendly. Veridian customers will use a so-called a ‘corn card’ which is made out of corn plastic.
A Nebraska company, Nature Works, turns corn into a plastic-like pellet and then melts and forms the material into other products.
A study shows producing corn plastic uses 65 percent less energy, and it emits 68 percent fewer greenhouse gases.
"If we were ever approached to turn our Visa debit and credit cards into a similar material we would definitely pursue that," said Renee Christoffer, VP Veridian Credit Union branches.
Veridian had already used the material to make coffee mugs for promotions.
