CEDAR RAPIDS - A Linn County inmate who didn’t return from work release Tuesday got beat up during his nine hours of freedom.

Shannon Coleman, 37, now has a pending charge of escape after failing to come back to the Linn County Jail. He was supposed return from his court-ordered work release at 3 p.m. He was free for about nine hours before Cedar Rapids police arrested him around 11:42 p.m. at 326 H Avenue NW.

Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Coleman was asleep on a couch when officers found him, and he had injuries to his face and ankle from an assault. An ambulance transported him to St. Luke’s Hospital, but Coleman declined to file an assault report and he was returned to jail, police said.

Before he went missing, Coleman was serving one-year sentence for violating his probation, as well as assault on a peace officer and domestic abuse assault causing injury.
