ALTON, Ill. (AP) - Missouri Senator Kit Bond says he's confident a new measure that would upgrade seven Midwestern river locks could be approved by the end of the summer.

The Republican was among several speakers at a news conference today in Alton, Illinois, showing support for the $14 billion Water Resource Development Act.

The Senate on Wednesday passed its version of the bill. The House also has a version and both now head to conference.

The measure includes nearly $2 billion to double the size of Mississippi River locks at the Missouri towns of Canton, Saverton, Clarksville, and Winfield, and the Illinois town of Quincy.

The measure would upgrade locks on the Illinois River at the Illinois towns of Peoria and Versailles.
