CEDAR RAPIDS - When it isn't safe for children to live with their parents, the state tries to find relatives that can step in. The federal government is now helping to fund that effort.

Four Oaks Family and Children's Services received $600,000 from a federal grant.

The money will go to help abandoned or removed children find other biological family members, through search technology.

"It's to find families and reduce the time in foster care or not even have to go into foster care altogether," said Kelli Malone, Iowa KidsNet Project Manager.

Malone said the money is expected to serve about 200 children throughout the state over the three years the grant will be in effect.
