Convicted Manager Seeks Acquittal or New Trial

By Becky Ogann

IOWA CITY (AP) - A former Iowa kosher slaughterhouse manager convicted of financial fraud is asking for an acquittal or a new trial.

In a motion filed late Thursday, an attorney for Sholom Rubashkin says his conviction last week on 86 counts of financial fraud should be overturned because the prosecution was allowed to enter evidence regarding immigration charges.

U.S. District Court Judge Linda Reade divided Rubashkin's 163 immigration and financial fraud charges into two trials. Rubashkin's immigration charges were dismissed on Thursday at the request of prosecutors.

Rubashkin faced the charges after a massive immigration raid in May 2008 at the Agriprocessors plant in Postville, Iowa.
