Dexter Workers in Fairfield Remain on Strike

AP - Workers at a commercial laundry manufacturing plant in Fairfield remained on strike Monday. That's after rejecting a contract offer over the weekend.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local 1293, represents about 210 workers at the Dexter Apache Holding plant.

Union representative Ed Miller says workers rejected a proposed five-year contract. That's because it would have significantly increased insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs for workers. It provided just a 90-cent an hour increase over the five years, however.

He says a pay increase that wouldn't have kept pace with the cost of living and the insurance increases weren't satisfactory for workers. Miller says he and company officials have tentatively agreed to meet today to resume talks.

Picket lines went up Saturday night just after midnight. That's after workers voted 139-to-10 against accepting the contract proposal.
