DUBUQUE — Loras College will get hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Federal government to battle illiteracy.
The Loras for Literacy initiative received word that they will receive a $285,876 earmark through the United States Department of Education to continue their multifaceted efforts to develop young readers and writers in the Loras College area.
Loras for Literacy works with local elementary schools to provide after-school tutoring, as well as other after-school literacy programs and events, including Family Reading Night at the Dubuque Multicultural Family Center where children can come for a story and leave with a free book and free pizza.
Representatives from Loras say that the program will expand its initiatives, one effort will be a new children’s theater workshop where kids students can develop reading and writing skills through role playing, improvisation and group reading.
Loras for Literacy received a $430,348 grant last year.
