Possible Bacterial Meningitis Death

By Daren Sukhram

CEDAR RAPIDS - We're following some developing news about the death of a 21-year-old student at Kirkwood Community College.

Linn county Public Health confirms it is investigating whether that student died of bacterial meningitis. The student also had H1N1.

"We are awaiting blood work and lab reports back to give us the final confirmation. We are proceeding under the assumption that it is bacterial meningitis," said Linn County Public Health's Curtis Dickson.

Public health is contacting people who may have been in contact with the student.

But they are not identifying the victim.

Bacterial meningitis is separate from viral meningitis, which is not considered fatal.

Linn county public health says symptoms of bacterial meningitis include a high fever, headache and stiff neck.
