13 Reported Dead, Iowan Among Injured in Ft. Hood Shootings

By Daren Sukhram

FORT HOOD, TX - Thirteen people are dead and 30 others wounded after an Army officer opened fire at around 1:30 p.m. at the Ft. Hood soldier processing center. Soldiers were preparing for deployment to Iraq.

An Iowa native is among those injured. Joy Clark of Des Moines was shot in the arm. Her family tells TV9 she's expected to survive.

Military officials in Washington say Hasan was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being transferred to the Texas base in July. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison says Hasan was about to deploy overseas.

KCRG-TV9 has learned that none of the Iowa National Guard’s 9,400 soldiers and airmen were at Fort Hood, Texas. We talked with a Cedar Rapids native who is stationed at Fort Hood. Click here to read his story.

Fort Hood is the US military's largest base and home to as many as 30,000 residents. In many respects, Fort Hood is a city, with malls, a theater, softball fields and schools.

A cousin of the man suspected of opening fire at Fort Hood says his family is shocked and saddened by the tragedy. Nader Hasan said in a statement issued late Thursday that he and his family are filled with grief for the families of the victims.

He says that Nidal Hasan's family knows little about what happened, but that they want to send "our most heartfelt sympathies" to the families of the victims. He also says that Hasan was raised in America, and that his family loves and is proud of their country.
