CEDAR RAPIDS – A three-car accident on the southwest edge of Cedar Rapids sent two drivers to the hospital Wednesday night.
Just before 5 p.m., a southbound car driven by Thomas Shurtz, 16, of Shellsburg, was broadsided by an eastbound van driven by Kimberly Kankelfitz, 44, of Atkins, at the intersection of 80th Street and 16th Avenue SW. The collision pushed the Shurtz car into another car, driven by Kari Kibby, of Cedar Rapids, which was stopped on 80th Street.
Shurtz and Kankelfitz were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Kibby was not injured.
Authorities said that the van and the car were traveling below highway speeds at the time of the accident, but that the incident is still under investigation. Charges are pending.
