Attempt Made to Extort Anti-Tax Group

By Daren Sukhram

MASON CITY (AP) - A Mechanicsville woman has been charged
with trying to extort an anti-tax group.

Mary Kathryn Moravek is accused of attempting to extort $1 million from Iowans for Tax Relief and its co-founder, David Stanley of Muscatine.

The 51-year-old Moravek was arrested Tuesday after meeting with an undercover detective. The man was to deliver a $30,000 payment from Stanley and Iowans for Tax Relief in exchange for keeping quiet about illegal campaign contributions.

Moravek recently told the Cedar Rapids Gazette the organization reimbursed its lobbyist, Cloyd Robinson, for checks he wrote to state and municipal political candidates. Iowans for Tax Relief president Ed Failor Jr. is denying any wrongdoing.

Moravek is charged with extortion, a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison. She has been released from the Muscatine County Jail.
