EASTERN IOWA - We now know who the big winners are for dozens of city elections across eastern Iowa.
Cedar RapidsFirst, we'll start off with the race for Cedar Rapids mayor. Voters overwhelmingly chose Ron Corbett to be the city's next mayor. He'll replace Kay Halloran in January. Corbett won with 62-percent of the vote. Brian Fagan was the runner-up with 36-percent. P.T. Larson finished with 2 percent.
Next to the Mayor's race in Cedar Rapids, the competition for District Three came with the most fireworks. And on Wednesday, there still isn't a clear winner. Pat Shey gave up his at-large council seat to go against incumbent Jerry McGrane. Shey had the most votes, but not the majority he needed to win.
The two candidates for District Three will have a runoff election on December 1st. Pat Shey and Jerry McGrane had a lot of TV ads that ran here on KCRG-TV9. McGrane attacked Shey for not attending all of the meetings and work sessions during his term. Shey fired back by saying his decisions were better for Cedar Rapids than the choices McGrane made. Between now and the runoff, each side says they'll work on digging up more voters and connecting with the neighborhoods.
"It'll be a very different race in a runoff, getting your voters is key so you won't get the turnout that's driven by the mayor's race so it'll be a very different campaign," said Pat Shey, City Council candidate.
"I really wasn't expecting anything different. So, I'm prepared for the next 30 days," said Jerry McGrane, City Council candidate.
McGrane says the last time he was elected to the council he won in a runoff.
The Cedar Rapids at-large race will also face a runoff. Chuck Swore captured one seat. But Donald Karr Junior and Aaron Saylor will meet in a runoff December first for the second seat. In District One, incumbent Kris Gulick easily kept his seat, beating out Tim Pugh and Ryan Russell.
WaterlooThe race for Waterloo mayor will also go to a run-off election on December 1st. Buck Clark leads the group, but is short of the majority he needs to win. He will take part in a runoff with Steve Schmitt. Reggie Schmitt is third.
Waterloo has filled a couple city council seats. At large, Bob Greenwood easily won reelection over challenger Martin Nance. David Jones won the Ward One city council seat. He's leading John Murphy. In Ward Three, Incumbent Harold Getty easily won re-election, holding off four challengers. And in Ward Five, incumbent Ron Welper also won re-election. He beat out challenger Dale Willie.
Cedar FallsIn Cedar Falls, UNI student Gage Rewerts challenged long-time incumbent Jon Crews for mayor. And Crews will easily win a 12th term.
Iowa CityIn Iowa City, voting was off sharply from the last city council elections in 2007. With voter turnout only at 10-percent in Iowa City, voters decided on the three seats on the city council. Connie Champion survived in a tight win over Mark McCallum for her fourth term. She will welcome Susan Mims and Terry Dickens, who both captured the at-large seats. All three candidates point to the budget as the critical issue.
"Between the budget, that's something we have to approach. Also, the city manager position and something else will come up. It always does," said Terry Dickens.
Compare this year's 10-percent turnout in Iowa City with two years ago, voter turnout hovered at nearly 35-percent then.
CoralvilleVoters in nearby Coralville also deciding a city council race. Incumbents John Lundell and Thomas Gill won reelection. Bill Hoeft will take the third at-large seat, beating incumbent Henry Herwig and Laurie Goodrich and Chad Chase.
DubuqueIn Dubuque two incumbent city council members will keep their seats. In the race for the first ward seat City Council Member Kevin Lynch had the win over challenger Bill Hammel. About five hundred votes separated those two candidates. At Large Candidate Ric Jones easily beat out his opponent Marcos Rubinstein by more than two thousand votes. Jones is now looking at the future.
"We are out of the cave we are going to climb over the next hill. And we will take it on with both eyes open and see what we can come up with," said Ric Jones, Dubuque City Council.
In an unopposed race for the third ward seat, Joyce Connors will keep her spot. And voters kept Mayor Roy Buol in his position. Buol ran unopposed.
