Lottery to Stay Out of Video Gambling Talks

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - The head of the Iowa Lottery says he staying out of any discussions about bringing back video gambling machines to retail outlets, but he'll offer advice if asked.

The Legislature in 2006 banned the lottery's TouchPlay gambling machines that were in about 3,200 convenience and grocery stores and bars. The machines resembled slot machines, and there was a public uproar about their widespread availability.

Some legislative leaders have recently said video gambling could be considered on a more restrictive basis to help generate revenue for the state's troubled budget.

Lottery CEO Terry Rich says the lottery's role will be to run numbers and give advice if it's requested during the upcoming legislative session.
