Greater Dubuque Launches Growth Campaign

By Katie Wiedemann

New jobs, new people, new businesses. It's all part of Greater Dubuque Development's latest campaign called "Destination for Opportunity.”

The economic development organization is looking for funding to make those goals happen. City leaders have bold goals for the next five years.

They want to add 5200 new jobs and increase the population by six percent. By the year 2012 the streets of Dubuque could be packed with 5,000 more business professionals.

Board Chairman for The Greater Dubuque Development Corporation, Dave Becker said, "Young people are looking for opportunities and if we create great new career opportunities in Dubuque, people will want to come here, they'll really enjoy it, it's a wonderful place to grow."

The plan is to get those people to Dubuque by attracting new businesses and helping existing businesses expand.

G.D.D.C. Executive Director, Rick Dickinson said, "Opportunity for a great job, for a company to make great profits and opportunity for a tremendous quality of life. We have the whole package now we are going to do it in spades.”

But funding those opportunities doesn't come cheap.

Its estimated price tag is right around six point two million dollars.

During the kick-off event, the city of Dubuque handed over a 500,000 thousand dollar check to help. The county pledged 200,000 dollars.

And the Theisen Company gave more than one million dollars to the campaign.

It’s a promising start to an up-hill battle.
