CEDAR RAPIDS - Police have arrested a 17-year-old from Hiawatha for allegedly shooting a man in southeast Cedar Rapids late Sunday.

Timothy Reynolds, 17, has been charged with attempted murder after witnesses identified him as the shooter in the incident in the 1400 block of Fourth Avenue SE, police said.

Christopher Pearson, 38, was shot once in the abdomen around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, and was laying on the ground when police arrived. Pearson was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Lt. Kenneth Washburn said early Monday morning that Pearson had survived through the night.

Police located Reynolds about a block away, inside the Rose Apartments, 1407 Third Ave. SE. An investigation led officers to apartment No. 5, where they found a handgun. Reynolds was arrested then for interference with official acts and taken to the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center.

Investigators worked through the night and spoke to Pearson at the hospital Monday morning. Witnesses told police Reynolds and Pearson exchanged words just before the shooting.

Police say Reynolds will be charged as an adult because he is within six months of his 18th birthday.
