Man Robs Oxford Bank at Gunpoint, Steals Getaway Car

By Becky Ogann

OXFORD - Police have released photos from a late-morning bank robbery in Oxford.

Shortly after 11:00 a.m. a gunman entered the First Trust and Savings Bank in Oxford, about 18 miles west of Iowa City.

Authorities say the man, who fired a shot while committing the robbery early Wednesday, is believed to have committed a similar robbery in Story County (story on KCCI.com).

Oxford police say the man took the keys from someone in the bank and fled in their 2204 gray Mazda MZ6, similar to the one pictured below. The car has personalized Hawkeye plates "HILSTOY".

The suspect is described as a white male, 6' 2" and has a thin build and dark hair. He was wearing a handkerchief over his face. He wore a dark colored sweatshirt, and dark khaki pants with side pockets.

Story County authorities say the robber, who is suspected in a similar heist in Slater, is known to ditch the stolen vehicle about two miles from the robbery. He then is picked up by another car driven by an accomplice.

No one was injured in either robbery.

Anyone with information on this or locates this vehicle is asked to call the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office at 319-356-6020 or the Johnson County Tip Line at 319-354-3729
