DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - An aide to Gov. Chet Culver says the
office will act quickly after state agencies submit their plans for
dealing with a 10 percent spending cut.
Chief of staff John Frew says after agencies meet the Tuesday
deadline, budget experts will work into the night compiling the
plans. The governor's office expects to issue a report late
Wednesday morning detailing the across-the-board spending cuts
ordered by Culver.
Frew concedes the cuts will force big layoffs, with staffers
estimating reductions of 1,000 workers plus additional cuts by the
state's public universities.
Frew says it's important to act quickly because the state is
already one-fourth of the way through the budget year.
The cuts followed plunging tax revenues.
