School Districts Look at Raising Property Taxes to Absorb Budget Cuts

DES MOINES - Many Iowa school districts will likely raise property taxes to absorb Governor Culver's 10-percent budget cuts. Culver wants districts to use their reserve funds. But a Des Moines Register article reports a third of Iowa districts face budget cuts larger than their 2008 reserve fund.

Dubuque, for example, actually has a deficit for its reserves. Iowa City would also come up short. Those districts may consider raising property taxes. The reserve funds at Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls and Waterloo school districts are enough to cover the cuts
