H1N1 Debate: How Many Illnesses Before a School Closes?

CEDAR RAPIDS - Many schools in eastern Iowa are reporting a high level of absences. Some wonder what goes into the decision to close a school because of illness.

Schools we spoke with say the decision to close or stay open does not depend on the number of kids out sick, but teachers and staff. In Des Moines, St. Joseph Catholic School made the decision to close after a number of teachers and staff fell ill.

At Clear Creek Amana High School in Tiffin, Principal Tom McDonald says 20% of the student body is out sick this week. McDonald says there are no plans to close the school, unless a high number of teachers and staff call in sick.
