DES MOINES (AP) - Former Gov. Terry Branstad has hired a veteran Republican operative to run an exploratory committee studying whether he should run again for the office he held for four terms.

Richard Schwarm, a former law partner with Branstad, says the former governor has hired Jeff Boeyink. He's former executive director of the Republican Party of Iowa and a former operative for Iowans for Tax Relief, an anti-tax group.

Some say moving from the state GOP to Branstad's operation is a signal of establishment approval of Branstad's move.

Boeyink resigned his position with the state GOP on Monday, freeing him to take the position with Branstad.
