DES MOINES (AP) - Chief Justice Marsha Ternus says she must find $16 million in cuts in the state's court system and that layoffs will be part of the reduction.
Ternus says in a message posted to workers on the court's Web site on Monday that 95 percent of the court system's budget is personnel-related and that a reduction in the work force will be unavoidable.
Last week, Gov. Chet Culver ordered a 10 percent across-the-board cut in the state's budget for the current fiscal year because of a larger than expected decline in state tax collections.
Ternus did not announce details of the cuts or the number of people who will be laid off. She says those decisions will come later this week.
