DES MOINES (AP) - University of Iowa president Sally Mason indicates layoffs and furloughs may be unavoidable because of state budget cuts.

In an e-mail to faculty and staff on Friday, Mason said the cuts will involve making difficult decisions.

The 10 percent across-the-board state cut announced Thursday by Gov. Chet Culver means a reduction of nearly $60 million for the regents system, which includes the UI, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa. Both Iowa's and Iowa State's budgets will be reduced almost $25 million each due to the cut.

Board of Regents President David Miles didn't address the issue of a midyear tuition increase in a statement he released Thursday about the budget cuts, though in September he said a midyear tuition increase remained on the table. The board will meet Wednesday to discuss the budget cuts.
