CHARLES CITY (AP) - A juvenile court officer contends a 14-year-old Charles City youth accused of murdering a 3-year-old girl should be tried as an adult.

The teenager is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual abuse in the July 10 asphyxiation death of Krystel Banes, 3, also of Charles City. The girls body was found at the home of the accused teen's parents.

Floyd County juvenile court services officer Scott Jensen testified during a hearing Wednesday the 14-year-old's case should be moved to adult court "to provide the best efforts for possible rehabilitation."

Jensen told Judge Gregg Rosenbladt that under Iowa's "youthful offender status" in adult court, the teen could be returned to juvenile court at age 18 and his rehabilitation progress reviewed.

The teen, along with his parents and the parents of the victim, attended the hearing.
