Treatment Plant Discharges into Creek

By Becky Ogann

ELDRIDGE (AP) - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says an equipment failure has caused the Eldridge treatment plant to discharge waste water into a nearby creek.

Officials say an unknown amount of waste water was discharged into an unnamed tributary of Crow Creek. The discharge was discovered by plant employees early Wednesday.

According to Natural Resources officials, the discharge was caused when the electronics that runs the pump system bringing sewage into the plant, as well as an alarm system, failed overnight.

Repairs were made, ending the discharge.

Officials say people and pets should avoid the area of the discharge and Crow Creek for 48 hours.
