WASHINGTON — Sen. Chuck Grassley has found another high-tech gadget to stay in touch with his staff and the world — even during Senate Finance Committee hearings on health care.

While Grassley offers and debates amendments on the legislation, his new tech buddy, Amazon.com’s Kindle, is his remote office, allowing him to discreetly receive memos from his staff, read newspapers and review other information.

The 76-year-old Republican from New Hartford started using the Internet-connected paperless book at the suggestion of Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., just down the committee dais. “He uses it anywhere and everywhere,” spokesman Beth Pellett Levine said. “It’s with him as he travels Iowa.”

In his youth, a radio was a near luxury for Grassley’s family. Now he farms with a cell phone at his side and he is on such social networking sites as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and MySpace.
